I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw a post on HotUKDeals earlier this week regarding a deal at Tesco on champagne.
’tis the season for supermarkets to slash their prices on beers, wines and spirits and the likes of Lidl and Aldi have been doing a good job on the wines front this Christmas.
This week, Tesco made their position very clear by slashing the price of their award winning champagne Louis Delaunay from £25.99 to £8.
The only problem was getting your hands on a bottle. It isn’t being sold online, every time I visited my nearest store all I could see was Andre Carpentier champagne staring me in the eye as I walked in. I mean – there’s nothing wrong with this Andre Carpentier champagne – it’s £13.49 and supposed to be good – but it hasn’t won any awards and you can stick it in your basket online – it was too easy. I wanted a challenge – I wanted £8 champagne!
So… Saturday morning (today) and I wanted to be in and out of the shops near where I live before the “Christmas Crazies” descended. At 8:20am I walked into store – and what did I see? Louis Delaunay champagne – right there, on a gondola as I walked through the main doors. I picked up three bottles, started to walk off – then reached out and grabbed another one for good measure – to the dismay of a shopper who must have wondered what all the fuss was about.
£32.00 for four bottles of champagne – not bad for a mornings work.
I too am a quaffer of cheap champagne so my eyes lit up when I saw that Louis Delaunay was back on Tesco’s shelves. Alas, it is a different colour from the last lot and I doubt if it is real. I’m not saying Tesco is cheating us but whoever sold this lot to Tesco certainly is.
Amusing and quite a claim to accuse a supermarket of selling counterfeit champagne…
